This is one of Steve Fossett’s many pet projects. Keep in mind that the powered aircraft record is only 80,000' and this thing is dependent on some really thin air blowing upward from the Andes to achieve this — the tow plane only takes it to 44,000' and the updrafts do the rest . They’re aiming for 90,000' if the conditions allow.
Despite being owned by Airbus, this is definitely
a homegrown US endeavor.

Air-breathing powered aircraft world record is 85,135 feet (held by, of course, the SR-71), at least for level, sustained flight.
Aleksandr Vasilyevich Fedotov took a MiG-25M up to 123,520 feet very briefly
in a zoom climb back in 1977, though.

Payne and Sandercock, huh?

The other way around, chronologically speaking.

Gliders and hang gliders are capable of some amazing things. The current distance record for hang gliding is 472 miles. It was set in Texas back in 2012. Imagine flying for 11 hours, non-stop!

When I was 13-14, I took sailplane lessons from the team who held about half of the distance records in
the US. The Appalachian ridges from TN to PA are a very popular route. I can’t imagine doing anything close to that while dangling below a fabric wing, though :D

It’s a more visceral experience, for sure. I’ve never been in a glider, but I did get enough experience in a hang glider to get my H-2 rating. I’ve done aerotow, foot launch, and winch tow. I didn’t stick with it long enough to start thermaling, but I might pick it up again after I complete my private pilot certificate.

Read that as “Glider breaks at 62000 feet” and was really confused

That would be bad. Depressurization at that altitude boils your blood.
Sounds awesome!

Sorry if I stepped on your toes with this . I hadn’t seen your post, and I only read about this today. The Blackbird ultimate recored is 85k and some change. They’re shooting for 100k over the North Pole. That’s nuts.

No worries -- yours was a lot more content-rich and interesting...this was just a blurb!

I stole a bunch from their website. But hey, isn’t that how this business works?
